At the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), Vietnam made a strong commitment that caught the world's attention: achieving net zero emissions by 2050. This is not just a diplomatic promise, but a push to trigger an unprecedented energy transition revolution in the country's history.
However, to make this commitment a reality, we cannot rely solely on installing more solar panels or wind turbines. The missing technological “piece” that will determine the success or failure of this roadmap is the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
1. From Commitment to Action: The Position of BESS in Power Planning 8
The Vietnamese government has materialized its Net Zero commitment through the National Power Development Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050 (Power Plan 8). A landmark change has taken place: the target for battery storage (BESS) development has skyrocketed.
Under the adjusted scenario, the expected battery storage capacity reaches 10.000 – 16.300 MW by 2030 and can go up to 96.000 MW by 2050This huge number confirms that BESS is no longer a supporting technology, but has become a mainstay in the national energy infrastructure, alongside the boom of renewable energy.
2. Solving the Problem of "Excess Sunlight, Lack of Electricity"
The biggest challenge with renewable energy is its intermittency: the sun shines only during the day, and the wind does not blow all the time. This leads to a paradox of “abundance but shortage of electricity” at some points, forcing clean energy plants to cut back on their output.
BESS solves this problem by acting as an “energy treasury”. It collects all the excess clean electricity (that would otherwise be wasted) and re-delivers it to the grid when needed. Thanks to BESS, the share of renewable energy in the power supply structure can be increased to 70-75% without causing system instability, directly reducing dependence on coal and gas thermal power.

3. Replace Peaker Plants
In the past, to meet the surge in electricity demand during peak hours, the power system had to mobilize oil or gas-fired power plants (peaker plants). These plants have very high operating costs, low efficiency and emit large amounts of greenhouse gases.
BESSs are taking over this role perfectly. A battery system can react and deliver power in milliseconds without emitting any $CO_2$ on-site. Converting oil-fired power plants to BESSs that integrate renewable energy is the fastest and most effective way to decarbonize the national grid.

BESS is the bridge between Vietnam’s present and Net Zero future. For businesses investing in this field, this is not only a business opportunity but also a direct contribution to the national mission of creating a green and sustainable economy.
