1. TCVN 170:2022 – Core Standards on Construction (Execution)
TCVN 170:2022 (standard set replacing TCXDVN 170:2007) is a national standard set on "Construction of steel structures and aluminum structures". Specifically, TCVN 170-2:2022 is the most important part, regulating “Technical requirements for steel structures”.
- Scope of application: This standard provides technical requirements for the construction and manufacture of components from hot-rolled structural steel (strength up to S700), cold-formed steel, and the welding of reinforcing steel into steel structures.
- General technical requirements: The standard specifies requirements for:
- Material: All steel and welding materials must be inspected, graded, marked, straightened and cleaned of rust and grease before processing.
- Processing: Must comply with detailed drawings, priority given to mechanical methods.
- Assembly and connection: Regulations on tolerances, welding techniques, and bolt assembly.
2. TCVN 8790:2011 – Vital Standards for Protective Paints
An important part of construction and acceptance work is protecting the structure from corrosion. TCVN 8790:2011 The name "Steel structure protective paint - Construction and acceptance process" is a mandatory standard for this category.
This standard details three stages:
a. Surface Preparation
This is a key factor. The standard requires that the surface must be cleaned of rust, grease and dissolved salts (if any). The cleaning level must meet the requirements (e.g. level 2 according to TCXDVN 334:2005).
b. Paint application
Clearly specify construction conditions to ensure paint film quality:
- Weather: Do not paint when it is about to rain, humidity is not more than 85%, do not paint when there is strong wind.
- Method: Can be sprayed, rolled or brushed.
c. Inspection & Acceptance of paint layer
A structure is considered to meet the requirements for protective paint when it passes the following tests:
- External inspection: The paint film must be even, not peeling or wrinkled.
- Dry film thickness (DFT): Use a specialized measuring device to check and ensure the thickness is as designed.
- Adhesion: Test with a knife to ensure the paint adheres firmly to the steel surface.
3. Other Support Standards
Like the design standard, TCVN 170 also refers to a system of auxiliary standards for materials and connections, including:
- TCVN 1916:1995: Technical requirements for bolts and nuts.
- TCVN 3223:1994: Electric welding rod.
- TCVN 8789:2011: Standards on technical requirements of paint materials.
- TCVN 10307:2014: Although specialized in “Steel Bridge Structures”, this standard also provides very detailed general technical requirements for fabrication, assembly and acceptance, often used as a reference for heavy industrial steel structures.
