While the planning targets are ambitious, where does the battery energy storage system (BESS) in Vietnam stand on the development map on the ground? We are at a crucial transitional stage from pilot models to the first steps of commercialization.
This article will review the current picture, typical projects and technical challenges facing the market.
1. Pioneering Projects Shaping the Market
- National Pilot Project (50MW/50MWh): This is the first grid-scale BESS project invested by EVN, with support from ADB and GEAPP. The project’s objective is not profit, but a real “laboratory” to collect operational data, verify frequency control capabilities and develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the entire industry.
- VinFast and the Domestic Ecosystem: Vingroup is a leading private sector company with a battery factory in Ha Tinh. In addition to serving electric vehicles, VinFast is expanding into stationary storage solutions, laying the foundation for a “Made in Vietnam” BESS supply chain.
- BESS in Industry (C&I): Businesses like MM Mega Market have started deploying BESS combined with rooftop solar. The main motivation is to optimize operating costs and achieve green certifications (such as LEED, I-REC) to meet the requirements of the global supply chain.
2. Technical Challenges: Barriers to Overcome
Integrating BESS into Vietnam’s grid is not a simple “plug and play” scenario. Key technical challenges include:
- Connection Regulations: Circular 05/2025/TT-BCT has set strict requirements on remote monitoring and control capabilities. BESS systems must be compatible with the SCADA/EMS system of the National Load Dispatch Center to be able to participate in frequency control.
- Fire Prevention and Fighting Safety (PCCC): This is a top concern. Currently, Vietnam does not have a separate TCVN for fire prevention of Lithium-ion batteries, making design approval difficult and dependent on foreign standards such as NFPA 855.
- End-of-Life Processing: The problem of recycling discarded batteries is still an open problem, requiring early regulations and treatment infrastructure to avoid future environmental risks.
3. Future Prospects
The Vietnamese BESS market is forecast to boom in the period 2026-2030 as the pricing mechanism matures and technology costs continue to fall. The trend will shift from state-led pilot projects to strong private sector participation, especially in green industrial parks and large-scale wind and solar power projects.
Vietnam is at the starting line of the energy storage era. Although there are many technical and legal challenges, with political will and real demand from the grid, BESS is sure to become a vibrant and essential industry in the next decade.
