The quality of a steel structure project is determined from the first steps in the factory. From raw steel plates, how to create columns, beams, and trusses with perfect precision and load-bearing capacity? The answer lies in a strictly controlled production process, especially in three fundamental stages: steel cutting, assembly jigs and assembly welding.

1. Steel Cutting – The Foundation of Precision
This is the initial stage, transforming raw steel plates into steel billets (also known as flanges, webs) with precise shapes and dimensions according to the machining drawings. The accuracy of these steps directly affects the entire production and assembly process later.
Applied technology
At modern steel structure manufacturing factories such as Quyet Thang Factory, automatic cutting technology is given top priority:
- CNC (Computer Numercial Control) cutting: The cutting machine is completely controlled by computer, ensuring that straight and complex curved cuts are achieved with near-absolute precision.
- Plasma / Laser Cutting: Uses extremely high temperature Plasma or Laser beams to cut thick steel plates quickly and smoothly, producing sharp, burr-free cutting edges.
The Role of Quality Control (QC)
After cutting, QC engineers will conduct 100% geometrical inspection of the steel billets, comparing with the tolerances allowed in the technical drawings. Any deviations must be handled to avoid affecting the following stages.
2. Assembly fixture – Shaping the “skeleton” of the component
Once you have the standard steel billets, the next step is to position them in the correct design position to form the shape of the structure. For example: Joining three flat steel plates into an I-beam
- Implementation process: The steel blanks (flanges, webs) are placed on a special fixture. Technical workers will adjust and temporarily fix them with tack welds (fixture welding). This stage also includes machining and punching holes on the structure to serve the purpose of bolting later on the construction site.
- Technical requirements: The welding process must strictly comply with the approved welding procedure (WPS), including parameters of current, welding speed, welding rod type, etc. to ensure the weld reaches the required strength.
The Role of Quality Control (QC)
This is the most complex QC step. The QC engineer will inspect the weld surface visually and use non-destructive testing (NDT) methods such as:
- Ultrasound examination (UT): Using ultrasonic waves to detect hidden defects deep inside the weld.
- Magnetic Testing (MT) or Penetrant Testing (PT): Used to detect micro cracks on the weld surface.

Only components that pass all these rigorous tests are transferred to the next stages. The combination of modern technology and strict quality control procedures in the first three steps is the secret to creating steel structural components that meet domestic and international standards.
