Whether a steel structure is safe, durable and economical or not, all are decided right from the design stage. To ensure consistent quality nationwide, all design activities must comply with a strict system of Vietnamese Standards (TCVN). This is the "compass" that helps engineers calculate and propose the safest structural solutions.
This article will analyze in depth TCVN 5575:2012, the "backbone" standard for the steel structure industry, along with other important standards that every engineer, student or investor needs to understand.
1. TCVN 5575:2012 – Core Design Standards
TCVN 5575:2012 with the name "Steel structure - Design standards" is the most important technical legal document, replacing TCVN 5575:1991. (Note: According to updated information, this standard has been replaced by TCVN 5575:2024, however the basic principles are still inherited and TCVN 5575:2012 is still a common reference platform in many documents).
- Scope of application: This standard is used to design steel structures for civil and industrial construction works.
- Exclusions: This standard does not apply to traffic works (such as bridges) and irrigation works (such as gates and pipelines) because these works have their own specialized standards.
- Main content: TCVN 5575:2012 specifies the basic principles, calculation methods and structural requirements for all types of steel structures (columns, beams, trusses) and connections (welding, bolts).
2. TCVN 2737:1995 – Standards on Loads and Impacts
A steel structure design cannot “stand alone”. To know how big a column or beam needs to be, you must first know what forces it will have to withstand. TCVN 2737:1995 is the standard that specifies the types of loads and impacts that TCVN 5575:2012 will use for calculation.
These loads include:
- Static load: The weight of the structure itself, of the roof, walls, partitions…
- Live load: Load of people, equipment, machinery, goods in the factory; roof repair load...
- Special loads: Wind loads, storms, and other impacts.
Engineers must combine all these types of loads according to TCVN 2737:1995 to find the most unfavorable case, from which to design a structure capable of withstanding it.
3. TCVN 9386:2012 – Seismic Design Standards
For structures built in earthquake-prone areas, compliance with TCVN 5575 and TCVN 2737 is not enough. At this time, TCVN 9386:2012 – Earthquake resistant design of structures is a mandatory standard.
- Purpose: This standard is not intended to make buildings “earthquake-proof”, but to ensure two core goals:
- Protect human life: The structure did not collapse suddenly, allowing people inside time to escape.
- Damage limitation: Minimize property damage to an acceptable level.
- Role: TCVN 9386:2012 provides additional regulations on seismic aspects, including foundation and geotechnical issues. It is used in parallel with other design standards (such as TCVN 5575 for steel, TCVN 5574 for concrete).
4. Reference Standard System (Materials & Connections)
TCVN 5575:2012 itself also cites (references) a series of other TCVN standards on materials and connections to ensure consistency. When designing, engineers must ensure that the materials used comply with:
- TCVN 1765:1975: Ordinary structural carbon steel.
- TCVN 3104:1979: Low alloy structural steel.
- TCVN 5709:2009: Hot rolled carbon steel used in construction.
- TCVN 1916:1995: Bolts, screws, nuts.
- TCVN 3223:2000: Electric welding rod.
Conclusion: Steel structure design is a complex scientific work, requiring compliance with a strict system of standards. Understanding and correctly applying TCVN 5575, TCVN 2737, TCVN 9386 and related material standards is proof of professionalism, ensuring that each project is designed with the highest safety and economic efficiency.
